I
think that most people I have spoken to agree that Oshkosh is the
biggest and best aviation event of the year. But only a few
from here in Idaho make the journey. This article
won’t discuss the events that took place at Oshkosh this year
as they are well documented in the EAA magazines (Sport Pilot, and
Sport Aviation) as well as on the EAA web site. Rather I
would like to address some of the questions/issues that people have
voiced to me over the years when expressing reasons why they are not
going to attend AirVenture. By Doug Kandle

Dennis Hain, N165DH, EAA 351074.I first flew my RV-9A, SN 165 (not a Quick-build kit) on 27 DEC 2002 and
now have 330 hours on it and am on the second engine! My tutor and helper was Darrel Agenbroad who is an A&P. We spent 2 years of marathon weekends punching rivets in Grandview where he farms. When the bird was ready for paint we hauled it to Caldwell where it was painted, assembled and test flown. Several modifications have been made since the first flight, added an auto pilot, EFIS, oxygen and other small changes. Have been to all the major fly-ins in the West and went to OSH in 2003. I have found the cruise to be about 170 mph and stalls at 44 mph, good range. Fuel burn is 7 gph or less at cruise, at altitude usually 6.5. With 160 hp I can get into many back country strips and cruise at 16,000-17,000 feet. The only negative thing I can say about it is the small tires are bad for unimproved strips but you can't have it all, it is a joy to fly!
