A Young Eagle Flight

At a young eagle event or rally this is pretty much the routine to be expected.  Keep in mind each event and each flight is a little bit different.  Flying conditions, location, and personnel will determine how the event is conducted.  Operational safety is the prime factor.  We want you to have fun but most of all we want you to be safe doing it.

In preparation for your Young Eagles flight you will need a parent or guardian to help you fill out a registration form and they will have to sign it.  The registration form is your ticket to fly and also provides EAA information about you so they can enter you in the worlds largest log book with over one million other young people who have experienced the joy of flight.

The next step is to get acquainted with an airplane.  A good pilot always does a preflight inspection of his airplane each day before he starts flying.   You will get a tour of the airplane by someone who will explain the control and instrument systems of an airplane.  You may not fly in the same airplane but the basic systems will be similar.  If you have a question now is a good time to ask it.

Meet your Pilot
You will then be introduced to a pilot who will see that you get to his airplane safely and make sure you are belted in correctly.  Each mission and each airplane is a little different so it is important to pay attention to any instructions your pilot gives you.
Our pilots have spent many hours studying, testing and practicing aviation skills.  Every two years they must have a biannual flight review with an instructor to make sure they are maintaining their flying skills.  Our pilots range from airline pilots to private pilots, each is skilled at managing the airplane they will be taking you for a ride in.

The Young Eagle Flight
Your flight will take about fifteen to twenty minutes and will give you a view of the local area.  You will be flying at an altitude of one thousand to fifteen hundred feet above the ground.  Your pilot is limited to standard flight maneuvers so don't expect any loops, rolls, or inverted flight.  The ride will be much like a ride in the family car only high above the ground where you will be able to see local land marks and points of interest, maybe even your house or school if you live near by.

After the flight when you are back on the ground your pilot will likely be willing to pose for pictures with you and answer any questions you may have about the flight you just experienced.  Our pilots have made many many flights and may not explain things that are routine to them but new to you, so don't be afraid of asking questions about anything you don't understand. One thing pilots like to do almost as much as fly airplanes is talk about flying airplanes. Just remember there may be others waiting for a ride.
Certificate
Certificate
All to soon the Young Eagle experience will be over. To help you remember your Young Eagle flight your pilot will present you with a certificate of flight with your name, date, place, type of aircraft and your pilot's signature along with the signature of the national Young Eagles chairman.  Your certificate is suitable for framing if you choose to do so.
Your name will also be entered in the worlds biggest log book and the Young Eagles program will send you additional information about other aviation interest and opportunities to the address of record from your registration.
